A letter sent to Dawn in October 2025 but not published.
Many imported multivitamin products sold in Pakistan contain gelatin derived from porcine (pig) sources, which is strictly prohibited in Islam. Due to unclear labeling, many consumers remain unaware of this and may use such products unknowingly.
The Pakistan Halal Authority Act, 2016, and the Import Policy Order, 2023, clearly prohibit the import and sale of dietary supplements containing any non-halal ingredients, including porcine-derived gelatin. Despite this, such products continue to enter the market.
I urge the Pakistan Halal Authority, DRAP, and customs officials to strengthen import checks, enforce halal certification requirements, and ensure clear labeling. Public awareness is also essential so consumers can make informed choices.
