The true spirit of Ramadhan

Ramadhan is departing. Today is the 27th Roza. Each year, this blessed month brings with it many lessons and, unfortunately, we often forget them soon after it leaves us.

What we need to understand is that fasting is not merely about staying away from food and drink. It carries a deeper purpose. During Ramadhan we are reminded to guard our tongues and our actions—to avoid lies, deception, and backbiting, and to stay away from all that is sinful.

Allah reminds us in the Qur’an that the purpose of fasting is to attain taqwa—to become conscious of Allah and strive for righteousness. The true success of Ramadhan is therefore not simply that we fasted for twenty-nine or thirty days, but that we emerge from it with hearts that are more mindful, more disciplined, and more devoted in our worship.

If the spirit of Ramadhan leads us to remain steadfast in our prayers, mindful in our words, and compassionate toward others, then its lessons will continue to guide us long after the blessed month has passed.
